2011 Bannister Mile is Set for May 17,2011 East High School

Also Happy New Year...

From Dave Caprera the Organizer.

As most of you know, for the last seven years now we have been celebrating the famous running achievement where Scott Hajicek paced Roger Bannister to the first sub-four minute mile

On Tuesday, May 17th, 2011, please join us at the East High School track (16th and Josephine in east Denver) to celebrate this historic event. Those of us leaving from the Y should plan to do so at the usual time (call it noon) and plan to arrive at the track around 12:20. As we have for the past five years, we will run a mile for time starting around 12:30 (in multiple heats if we have enough people; in past years the numbers have been between 10 and 22 people) and then a team relay event of 8x200. Admittedly, none of us has been close to the 4 minute barrier individually, but our best relay team almost broke it one year.

You may also remember that our last year New Years Eve day toast was snowed out. It is my intent to remember 2010 with a small toast on May 17th as well (however, given that we will be on the grounds of a public high school while school is in session, and the problems associated with getting a key to the track, I regret to inform the alcoholics among us that the toast will not be alcoholic.) As has been the custom in past years, a small tasting will accompany the toast. I would propose that the toast occur after the individual and before the medley to allow everyone to recover from their harder run.

If you would please, let me know if you are able to attend. Also, please inform other running friends of ours as they are also most welcome. I have used last year's e-mail addresses and I know they need to be updated so if you know of anyone I inadvertently omitted, please tell them of the plan.

I look forward to seeing you May 17.
